Amara, Sophie and Cecilia Schaffhausen excitedly rushed to the door when their father dropped in unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, months after their parents divorced and he moved to Minot, N.D.
Jessica Schaffhausen thought her ex-husband, Aaron, was working a construction job in North Dakota, but he'd been fired last week when he didn't show up for work. He had threatened to kill Jessica just a few months earlier, but on Tuesday he text-messaged her with a request: He was back in St. Paul and wanted to spend the day with his girls at the family home in River Falls, Wis. She agreed, but insisted that he leave the house before she returned home at 3:30 p.m.
The girls pulled him upstairs to show him their things. Their baby sitter told investigators she followed later, hugged the girls goodbye and left them in Amara's bedroom with their father.
At 3:30 p.m., Jessica Schaffhausen answered her phone and heard her ex-husband's voice: "You can come home now, because I killed the kids."

The independent panel investigating Pennsylvania State University's role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal has determined that the school's top leaders, including legendary football coach Joe Paterno, tried to cover up the abuse for 14 years.
Former FBI Director Louis Freeh, who led the investigation, discussed the findings of the panel's 162-page report at a news conference this morning.

PHILADELPHIA - Joe Paterno and other top Penn State officials buried child sexual abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago to avoid bad publicity, according to a scathing report Thursday that exposed a powerful "culture of reverence" for the football program and portrayed the Hall of Fame coach as more deeply involved in the scandal than previously thought.
The alleged cover-up by Paterno, then-university President Graham Spanier and two other Penn State administrators allowed Sandusky to prey on other boys for years, said the report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, who was hired by the university's trustees to investigate.

Russian MiG crashes in Eden Prairie

A vintage Russian jet was destroyed after crashing Thursday morning in Eden Prairie as it attempted to land for this weekend's annual air show.
The pilot, who hasn't been identified, was landing his 1975 MiG-21 at 10 a.m. at Flying Cloud Airport for this weekend's Wings of the North AirExpo. Officials said the jet's parachute, which helps slow the aircraft, was deployed, but appeared to collapse and detach, causing the plane to overshoot the runway.
The nose of the plane came to a rest in a roadside ditch on Flying Cloud Drive near the intersection of Pioneer Trail. No fire started, but the plane was heavily damaged.

The girls were found in separate bedrooms, with blankets pulled up to their necks and what appeared to be dried blood on their faces. Aaron Schaffhausen had been fired from his construction job last week.


RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- The three girls found dead in their River Falls home this week had their throats slashed, according to a criminal complaint Thursday charging their father, Aaron Schaffhausen, with first-degree intentional homicide.
Each of the girls was found lying in a bed with what appeared to be dried blood on their faces, the complaint said. Each had a blanket covering them up to their necks. According to preliminary autopsy results, the two older girls, Amara, 11, and Sophie, 8, died from having their throats slashed. The youngest, Cecelia, 5, had her throat slashed and was strangled.
According to the complaint, Aaron Schaffhausen called his ex-wife, Jessica, and said: "You can come home now because I killed the kids." That's when she called police.
St. Croix County District Attorney Eric Johnson would not say how Schaffhausen was able to kill all three of them separately. He had theories about why the gas was turned on in the home but would not elaborate. "I've been prosecuting for 30 years ... and this is by far the worst case I've seen," he said.

Wisconsin: Jealousy drove father to run down son, warrant says

A search warrant says a man accused of running down his young son and the boy's mother confronted her about a new relationship just before striking them with his SUV in Fitchburg.
The boy was still pinned underneath one of the vehicle's wheels when police arrived on the scene Monday, July 9. Yandel Castillo-Castillo, 2, was killed. His mother, Maria del Rosario Castillo-Castillo, was injured. The mother and child were returning home from lunch with Miguel Menendez-Ruvalcaba when they were confronted by the child's father.
The warrant says the father told the child's mother "you'll see what's going to happen to you and your child," and then accelerated and struck them. The State Journal reported that the father then got a knife from his SUV and stabbed the mother. She suffered puncture wounds to her neck.

 As young girls played soccer in the sun at a River Falls, Wis., park, more than 200 people gathered in the shade to mourn and remember three sisters found dead in their home one day earlier.
The vigil Wednesday night, July 11, included three minutes of silence, one for each of the Schaffhausen sisters -- Amara, 11; Sophia, 8; and Cecilia, 5.
Members of Amara's traveling soccer team wore their white jerseys and painted her No. 36 in blue and yellow on their left cheeks. Most of the girls played together for five years; some wept during the vigil.

Report: Penn St. officials concealed abuse

 STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno and other senior officials "concealed critical facts" about Jerry Sandusky's child abuse because they were worried about bad publicity, according to an internal investigation into the scandal concluded.
The 267-page report released Thursday is the result of an eight-month inquiry by former FBI director Louis Freeh, hired by university trustees weeks after Sandusky was arrested in November to look into what has become one of sports' biggest scandals.
The report concluded that Paterno, president Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz "failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade."
