Jealous Tennessee man allegedly smacks around his girlfriend because she had a pic of another guy on her Facebook page - but it was Mitt Romney

If the charges against him are true, Lowell Turpin, 40, of Tennessee really needs to Google the name “Mitt Romney” when he gets out of jail.

Mitt Romney should campaign more in Tennessee: a jealous resident of the Volunteer State confronted his girlfriend over a picture of a man on her Facebook page — and had no idea it was the GOP presidential candidate.
Lowell Turpin, 40, was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault last week following a violent confrontation with his live-in girlfriend over what he thought was a pic of a romantic rival on her Facebook page, police said.
The apparently news-blind boyfriend from Clinton, Tenn., “angrily demanded to know who the male was” — totally unaware that the man with the graying hair was the Republican presidential nominee, an incident report from the Anderson County Sheriff's Department noted.

Ritchie disinvited to speak at Minneapolis Catholic church; appearance: "just not appropriate"

Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, who had been invited to speak at St. Joan of Arc Church. Since Ritchie has been outspoken about the upcoming constitutional amendments, the church has rescinded their invitation.

After consultation with archdiocese officials, a Minneapolis Catholic church is rescinding a speaking invitation for Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, who is at the center of several controversies related to constitutional amendments on this fall's ballot.
Minnesota's top election official, Ritchie was invited to speak prior to Mass on Sunday, Aug. 12 at St. Joan of Arc Church in South Minneapolis. His talk was entitled "A Spiritual Path for Democracy."
Jim Accurso, spokesman for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, said Ritchie was not expected to address the constitutional amendments in his talk. But because he's been a high-profile target of amendment-related criticism, his appearance is "just not appropriate," Accurso said.
"The invitation to him is in the process of being withdrawn," Accurso said Tuesday afternoon. "He will not be speaking on the 12th."

Investigators charge Russian protest leader Navalny as Kremlin expands crackdown on dissent

MOSCOW - Russian authorities charged Alexei Navalny, one of President Vladimir Putin's fiercest critics, with theft on Tuesday, threatening him with a 10-year prison sentence as the Kremlin ramps up a crackdown on dissent. Navalny rejected the charges as "weird" and baseless.
Navalny, a 36-year-old anti-corruption crusader and popular blogger, has played a key role in rallying Russia's young Internet generation against Putin's rule. Over the winter, the lawyer spearheaded a series of rallies in Moscow that drew up to 100,000 people to the streets ahead of the March vote that handed Putin a third presidential term.
The State Investigative Committee said Tuesday that it suspects Navalny of organizing a scheme to steal assets from a state timber company totaling 16 million rubles (about half a million dollars). He was ordered not to leave Moscow as the committee pursues an investigation against him.
In Russia, authorities file initial charges to open a criminal probe, long before reaching the trial stage. In any case, Navalny insisted to reporters, "The charges are absolutely absurd."
Since Putin's re-election, the Russian government has struck back at the opposition, arresting some activists and using legislation to try curbing its activities.

Man's dying wish for $500 tip inspires charity

LEXINGTON, Ky.—As Seth Collins finished his penne pasta at a Lexington restaurant, he called over the waitress to fulfill his brother's dying wish.
He explained to her that his 30-year-old brother Aaron recently passed away, but that he'd left instructions in his will to leave a $500 tip for a server.
Then Seth Collins handed the waitress a stack of $20 bills.
The waitress, Chelsea Powell, took the money reluctantly and then smiled and said: "Are you kidding me?" She laughed nervously and had to cover her mouth from the excitement before giving Collins a hug.
The big tip at Bella Notte restaurant was the second $500 gratuity Seth Collins has left since Aaron Collins died on July 7. And the tips will keep coming, thanks to more than $47,000 in donations from people inspired by Aaron Collins' dying act of charity.

Seattle Times: Michele Bachmann deserves censure

She deserve the same censure in Congress that Joseph McCarthy received for his witch hunt for Communists 60 years ago.

Washington Post: Bachmann's politics of slime

Bachmann's accusations are in the squalid tradition of McCarthyism and other shameful chapters of our history in which politicians have slandered their rivals as un-American

o conspiracy theorists like Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., the Obama administration's approach to the Arab world is the product not of considered diplomacy but of wicked "influence operations," traceable to the Muslim Brotherhood and its agents.
Exhibit A among those agents with murky "ties" to the Muslim Brotherhood, Bachmann warns darkly, is Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Bachmann's smear of Abedin, a 37-year-old Muslim American born and educated in this country, was contained in a letter last month to the State Department's inspector general's office.
It would be simple to ignore the baseless and paranoid assertions of  Bachmann were she not a member of Congress and an also-ran in the recent race for the Republican presidential nomination.
