A St. Paul police officer tumbled out of a squad car and fired at a man who had just ambushed and shot his police partner, a just-released video shows.
Officer Daniel King was seriously wounded but survived the Oct. 23 shooting by Chue Xiong, 22. Police fatally shot Chue Xiong.
Police provided two CDs with videos to the Pioneer Press, but one was in a proprietary format that bars the newspaper from posting it on its website.
In one video that police released Wednesday, Jan. 9, gunshots and shouts of "Mayday!" can be heard, along with King's utterances of pain. The officer was shot in the arm and in the back, said Dave Titus, St. Paul Police Federation president.
King is heard saying on the video, "I took one in the (bulletproof) vest. My arm is gone." Titus explained that King believed he was going to lose his arm, but doctors saved it.
Officer Brian Wanschura, King's partner who is seen tumbling out of the squad car in one video, saved King's life, Titus said.
