I think a lot of people in Minnesota, Republicans or Democrats are getting tired of the same old rhetoric coming from the same old politicians and are tired of the 3 week old state shutdown. I will admit up front I am a Republican, but I am tired of the Republican rhetoric. I have never met Michael Brodkorb, the spokes person for the MN GOP, but I hate the guy. Why? I am tired of the same old negative rhetoric that come from the GOP. I also can't stand the pathetic looks on Dayton's face in the pictures in the newspapers. The man looks like his shorts are too tight.
The bottom line on the budget crisis in Minnesota is that the solution lies somewhere in the middle and so far neither side wants to budge. The fact is we are to far in debt to tax ourr way out of the problem, and there is no way we can just plain cut state government back and get out of it without somehow raising new revenue. So what is the answer?
I say the answer is as plain as the Ace of Spades. Gambling. I know, Oh geez, we can't do dat, dats immoral, der I said it. Well gambling has been around since the first caveman bet his club, he could kill a sabre tooth on the first swing. We need to learn from history and from the success of others. Prohibition didn't work and now the states enjoy a regular income from the liquor tax. Certainly the war against drugs hasn't worked, but that is another story. But, gambling, the State of Minnesota has been getting gambling revenue for decades, lets just expand it. Let's learn from some of our other state residents. The Native American tribes have been running Casino's for quite some time and I don't see anything but positive news coming from the Indian Casino's. They have paid there taxes and donated generously to the cities they are in. The State of New Jersey gets plenty of revenue from there casino's and the State of Nevada, after getting rid of the mob is doing OK to.
We have an advantage, we will not be the first to have Casino's/Racino's and can learn from the mistakes of others. The bottom line with gambling is that it is not going to go away. So, if we do it right, we can solve the budget crunch and maybe even lower taxes. In my opinion put a casino at MOL and build one right next to the Vikings Stadium and give the race tracks their racino's.
